In April 2026, EuroMedAI’s leadership—Mohamed Alouane, Ermelinda Kanushi, and Dr. Alejandro Tlaie Boria—launched Mediterranean AI Safety Fundamentals as an internal introductory AI safety reading series.

Why this programme
Build the safety foundation before claiming safety impact.
Advanced AI may create severe, cross-border risks that no Mediterranean institution can address in isolation. A regional network can only contribute responsibly if its members share the concepts, threat models and standards of evidence needed to identify where their research, policy and convening work could matter.

How a reading circle could contribute to reducing catastrophic risk
The causal chain is deliberately explicit. Each later step depends on the earlier step and requires separate evidence.

Foundational learning
Members meet monthly around introductory AI safety readings, creating a common vocabulary and baseline understanding.
02 · Near-term outcome
Better risk reasoning
Participants become better able to distinguish advanced-AI threat models, assumptions and uncertainties from adjacent technology-policy concerns.
03 · Regional application
Mediterranean translation
That literacy helps members test which catastrophic-risk questions are relevant to Mediterranean research, institutions, infrastructure and cross-border governance.
04 · Downstream work
More safety-relevant action
The strongest questions can inform research, talent development, policy engagement or collaboration with organisations working directly on advanced-AI safety.
05 · Long-term contribution
Reduced catastrophic risk
If that downstream work changes decisions, capabilities or coordination at relevant institutions, it may contribute to lowering the likelihood or severity of catastrophic AI outcomes.
